Germany had occupied the French districts of Alsace an Lorraine. German language was imposed on the people of these two districts. The order hurt the pride of the people of Alsace and Lorraine. They were overpowered by strong patriotic feeling for their native language, French. The villagers felt sorry for not learning their own language French. Now they were to learn German. M. Hamel asks them to guard the French among themselves. It was their freedom to key.
