This poem presents a contrast to the poem The Schoolboy. Here, the child is perhaps, denied education. He went to school when he was a child but sat outside (at the learning's gate). When he grew up and entered the school, he felt a certain restlessness because such opportunity was not available to him. Instead he was asked to go back to fields, cattle and barrow which has become his profession now. He is trying to recall who it was who taught him to go to fields.
