can u think of some examples of goods/services being exchanged or wages being paid through barter?

Yes, in the rural areas generally crops and food grains are directly exchanged without the use of money. Similarly, agricultural labourers are normally paid not in cash but in kind, that is 4-5 Kg wheat or rice per day.
In household enterprises in which personal services are involved, a number of barter exchanges take place. Example: a small producer of milk exchanges his product against wheat with another farmer.
Barter exchange takes place even in international transactions. India may agree to supply certain amount of capital goods in exchange for a specified quantity of crude oil and so on.

1. In rural areas food grains and crops are directly exchanged 2. In the harvesting season, labourers are provided with a part of harvest rather than cash.

Take a case of shoe manufacture he wants to sell a shoe in market and buy wheat. The shoe manufacturer will be first exchange the shoe that he has produced for money and then exchange the money for wheat

  • In fact, there are numerous examples in this context. Especially, in rural areas, it happens many a time.
  • Sometimes, labour is not paid money and is given a considerable amount of grains like rice, pulses, etc. and vegetables and other necessary items.
  • The quantity of these items satisfies the magnitude of the wage. On the other hand, these items fulfill the basic needs of the worker for which generally the labour would spend the money.
  • Many times, one item like grain is exchanged with vegetables by the farmers.
