Can you explain how Flippers of penguin and dolphin are analogous and Wing of butterfly and flipper of whale are homologous?

Dear Student

Answer:
  • Flippers of Penguins and Dolphins are called analogous organs because analogous organs are those organs that have evolved differently but perform similar functions. Similarly, flippers of both dolphins and penguins help in swimming (common function) but they have evolved differently from each other. Hence, they are different structures and called as analogous organs.
  • Wings of butterfly and flipper of whale are called homologous organs because they have common embryonic structures but perform different functions. Wings of butterfly helps in flight whereas flippers of whale helps in swimming. Both of them have similar structural pattern, hence called as homologous organs
