Can you explain this Do you know?

Dear Student,

Consider the case of water. Here, water molecules have more freedom to move around than molecules in solids.A moving molecule will possess kinetic energy. Also there exist a force of attraction between the water molecules.Due to this water molecules also possess potential energy.

When we heat water, the water molecules speed up.As a result their kinetic energy is increased. If we continuously supply heat, water will begin to boil.It will break the bonds that are holding  water molecules together, which increases the potential energy.
Here, the heat energy supplied is given to increase both the kinetic and potential energies.

Thus we can say that heat energy given to a body will be the sum of increase in it's internal kinetic energy and potential energy.Or, heat energy will be equal to the internal energy of the molecules of a body.

Regards.
