In the respiration process, oxygen is used to generate energy. However, carbon dioxide is formed and released as a by-product in respiration. The respiration process takes place inside the tissue.

The oxygen and carbon dioxide gases are transported from one to part of the body through the blood. These gases temporarily link with the haemoglobin found in the red blood cells circulating through the blood vessels.

When the blood reaches the lungs, it picks up oxygen and releases carbon dioxide linked to it, while when it reaches the tissue, it releases oxygen and picks up carbon dioxide.
