Candle wax and petrol both produce the same gas on heating. Why is petrol a better fuel than wax?

For good fuels two things are important:-

1) High calorific value

2)  High ignition temperature.

Petroleum has high calorific value and ignition temperature. Hence it is good fuel than wax.
