Mr Otis began by searching every room in the house. Upon finding that the gipsies had left and all signs indicating that it had been a sudden departure, he sent off Washington and two other men to scour the district. In the meantime, he ran home and despatched telegrams to all police inspectors in the county, telling them to look out for a little girl who had been kidnapped by tramps or gipsies. He then ordered for his horse to be brought round and after insisting on his wife and three boys sitting down to dinner, he rode off down the Ascot road with a groom. The little Duke accompanied him on his pony because he was sick with worrying over Virginia, his beloved. They galloped to the railway station to inquire of the station master if anyone had seen a girl of Virginia's description. The response being negative, the station master wired up and down the line and assured Mr Otis that he would keep a strict watch. Mr Otis then rode off to Bexley, a village about four miles away which was a popular haunt of gipsies. However, the rural policemen could not give any information that would help him. Mr Otis returned home to the news that the gipsies had been caught on Brockley meadows but Virginia had not been with them. In fact they had agreed to join in the search for Virginia considering the kindness of her father who had allowed them to camp in his grounds. The carp pond had been dragged and the whole Chase thoroughly gone over but without any result.
