Carbon tetrachloride i.e. CCl4 is not used as a catalyst. It is used as a source of chlorine in many organic reactions. The CCl4 does not have any C-H bond and therefore doesnot undergo free radical mechanism, therefore it is also used as an organic solvent. It is a non-polar solvent therefore it is used to dissolve non polar solutes.
