Mrs Pearson is the submissive and docile protagonist of the play. She is neglected by her family and treated as a slave. Living her life in servitude, she has forgotten her individuality and the respect that she deserves in her family. She lives for her family and has forgotten that she has a life of her own.

Mrs Fitzgerald is Pearson's neighbour and an exact contrary of Mrs Pearson. She is a bold, dominating woman who lives life on her own terms. She is aggressive in nature and talks aggressively with the Pearson family while acting as Mrs. Pearson. she is 'older, heavier and strong sinister personality'.

Cyril is the son of Pearsons. He is a spoilt child and wants all the things to be done by his mother. He is someone who doesn't do something that is not liked by him. Mrs. Pearson parallels herself with him when she says 'I've joined the movement' for she also refuses to do what she doesn't like.

George Pearson is the husband of Mrs. Pearson. He is a dominating husband who would force her wife to prepare tea for him and in case the tea is not ready he would shout at her. He is a pompous man who would never shout at the bartender for being late but would never fail to shout at his wife. He is taken aback when his wife calls him by his name.

Mrs Fitzgerald and Mrs. Pearson have a role reversal for a day. Mrs. Fitzgerald is a more assertive and bolder woman than Mrs Pearson. She makes the Pearson family realise the importance Mrs Pearson as an individual. Her family took her for granted and treated her like a servant in the house. It was through Fitzgerald's assertiveness and aggressiveness that they realised that she deserves respect and care by her family members.

do you think mrs.fitzeralds magic helped the pearson family for better?

  • 6

Yes, Mrs. Fitzgerald's magic helped the Pearson family for better, it was instrumental in bringing a significant day in Mrs Pearson's life, a turning point, she was able to get herself free from the state of being suppressed all the time, finally the family realised her importance ,both the children realised the value of their selfless mother and Mr. Pearson realised the value of his never demanding wife.

This play, written in the 1950s is a humorous and satirical depiction of the status of the mother in the family. 1.what are the issues it raises? 2.Do you think it caricatures these issues or do You think that the problems it raises are genuine? How does the play resolve the issues? Do you agree with the resolution?

Mrs. Fitzgerald
Mrs. Fitzgerald is quite experienced and smart. She knows some esoteric magic that she learned in the East. She is heavier and has a 'strong and sinister personality'. She is liberated, strong, dominating and bold. She smokes and plays cards. Mrs Fitzgerald has a deep voice. Her accent is Irish. Mrs. Fitzgerald is firm, solid an d result -oriented. She sets all the spoilt members of Mrs. Pearson's family right.

Mrs. Pearson
Mrs. Pearson appears to be a timid and confused lady. She is in her forties. She is a devoted housewife. She enjoys serving her husband and  children. She is ignored and made to work throughout the day. In spite of their ill treatment, neglect and exploitation, she loves them all. In fact, for that she endures everything without any murmur or protest. We feel sympathy for her. We wish her to be a little more assertive. However, Mrs. Fitzgerald brings about a change in her personality. She helps her to become more assertive and dominating at the end.

not only the meritnation experts should look upto it and delete such comments....for instance..coments .made by @rishabhbhandari (RISHABH BHANDARI) and @gurjot (GURJOT)...!!about girls who jst asked some queries and were not intended to have a conversation like ths,,,!!!!

another thing...that i wanna say straight is..@pawan u r definitely not a stud...so stop posting pictures...and start concentrating on helping others or looking for ur answers rather than showing off ur photography or modelling skills..!!

and why the helll is this conversation not closed by any meritnation expert....like seriouslllyy..!!???

well i think... this is certainly not the way u can deal with ur students @meritnation.... u need to poke ur imaginary world...and delete such things...from the site!!!

Doris Doris Pearson is the daughter of Mrs. Pearson. She is a pretty girl in her early twenties. She looks pleasant but she is a 'spoilt' child. She makes her mother run after her all the time. She gives order to her as if Mrs. Pearson were the servant in the house. She asks her mother to iron her yellow silk. She expects tea to be served to her. She always thinks of her and her boy-friend, Charlie.
  • 4
Cyril Cyril is the masculine counterpart of Doris. He is also 'spoilt' like his sister. He is in the habit of treating his mother very casually. He asks if tea is ready. When Mrs. Pearson says 'no', he angrily answers back: "Why not?"  Then he orders: "Did you put my things out?" So he makes his mother run all the time doing one thing or the other.
