character sketch of Virginia as the harbinger of love and peace.

She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Otis. She was born in a London suburb shortly after Mrs. Otis returned from a trip to Athens. She is athletic and free-spirited, with golden hair and large blue eyes. She is a good rider who once raced and beat Lord Bilton.

Virginia is shown to have a sense of right and wrong. She censures the ghost for murdering his poor wife. She has a great regard for her family. So, she takes offence when the ghost calls her family horrid, rude, vulgar, dishonest. Yet, despite his crime and his offensive remarks, she cannot help pity his forlorn condition. She shows an inclination towards forgiveness and love. She offers him food and later, agrees to help him enter the Garden of Death. Clearly, she is the golden girl of the prophecy. Her selflessness bears fruit and Sir Simon is able to attain everlasting sleep.

Virginia grows up to marry her boy-lover, Cecil, the Duke of Cheshire. For her, the encounter with the ghost is a life-changing event. As she tells her husband, it has helped her understand the significance of life and death, and the power of love over the two.

Virigina is a good-hearted, active fifteen year old girl. Wilde says of her that she “was a little girl of fifteen, lithe and lovely as a fawn, and with a fine freedom in her large blue eyes. She was a wonderful Amazon, and had once raced old Lord Bilton on her pony twice round the park, winning by a length and a half, just in front of the Achilles statue, to the huge delight of the young Duke of Cheshire, who proposed for her on the spot, and was sent back to Eton that very night by his guardians, in floods of tears.” For all her activity, Virigina is distinguished from her brothers in that she does not participate in any of the pranks they play on the ghost. In fact, Virginia can be thought of as a version of the Victorian home-goddess character common in Victorian narratives; this person (always female) is the one who maintains domestic tranquility, has infinite patience, is always willing to help, and is honest to a fault, and has an unfailing sense of right and wrong. Notably, it is Virigina that gains the ghost’s confidence in Chapter 5, and it is her sympathy and understanding that makes it possible for the ghost to finally find rest. As the Duke says to Virginia when she leads her family to the ghost’s skeleton, now at peace: “What an angel you are!”

Virginia is full of human sympathy and benevolence. She does not ridicule the ghost like other members of her family. She is sensitive enough to read his troubled heart. The ghost requests her to accompany him to the Angel of death and beg mercy for him. She risks her life and even the Angel bows before her determination and selfless service. The ghost gets salvation. A wandering ghost gets permanent peace and she gets an aura. The ghost teaches her what life is, what death signifies and why love is stronger than both.

Virginia is a true judge of character. She sees a repentant soul and not a murderer. She helps the helpless ghost to get his ultimate desire fulfilled. She is a harbinger of love and peace. Her own family becomes a part of the funeral procession and it is all because of her that they have understood what a tormented soul yearns and pines for. She shows the importance of love and forgiveness.

Virginia deserves jewels and a loving life partner and she gets them both. A benevolent action done without the desire of getting any return gift and gets everything. Virginia is its proof. She is really a memorable character and in spite of her short presence she is the real heroine of the novel. She represents both the cultures British and American.

Introduction--In the novel " The Canterville Ghost " it is Virginia who acts as the angel of mercy and conveys Oscar Wilde's moral message of importance of love and forgiveness.
Virginia becomes the vehicle , the touchstone, a young girl , who achieves the impossible task of transforming a murderer into one desperate for salvation.

Incident - Unlike the rest of her family , Virginia does not ridicule , laugh , trick or trouble him. She is sensitive enough to feel his misery , a friend to recognise his distress , a human being to reach out to him . She listens to him, learns an important lesson , as well as true meaning behind the riddle . She agrees to weep for him as he has no tears , prays as he has no faith and accompanies him to the angel of death and begs for mercy for him . She risks her life , goes bravely through the wainscotting and goes with him to the garden of Death.

Result- Virginia's ability to accept Sir Simon leads to her enlightenment . Sir Simon taught her , "What life is , what Death signifies and why love is stronger than both." She not only deserves the jewels but is also blessed with a loving husband and the promise of future happiness . She had only seen a repentent soul , not a murderer . So he is granted forgiveness and ultimately rests in peace.
