Chekov has used humour and exaggeration in the play to comment on courtship in his times. Illustrate with examples from the lesson, ?The Proposal?. Also mention the values, you think any healthy relationship
requires

Solution:

During Chekov's time, courtship was rather different from what it is in the present times. A marriage proposal was formally sent to the girl through her parents and she was not addressed directly.
In the play 'The Proposal', when Lomov wants to marry Natalia, he talks to her father, Chubukov regarding this. He does not  propose to Natalia directly.  He dresses in his best when he meets Chubukov, but he refrains from saying anything personal to Natalia.
Chekov has used humour and exaggeration in showing the whole process and adding the trivial, petty fight between the suitors regarding matters of no importance.
Any healthy relationship is based on the foundation of trust, love and respect. A good relationship has healthy communication among partners.

Courtship in the olden days was nothing like what it is now. A proposal had to be sent very formally through the parents and their consent was needed to get married. In the play, we see that Lomov wants to marry Natalia but instead of talking to her directly, he calls her father to ask for her hand in marriage. He arrives dressed in his best clothes and presents himself in the best possible way so that Chubukov may not refuse the proposal. Even when he talks to Natalia, he refrains from saying anything personal.
Relationships need a lot of fuel to keep them strong and healthy. Trust and understanding between both people are essential to make it successful.
