chocolate is chewed while travelling aeroplane.why

Dear Student
While travelling in the aircraft our ears ache at the time of take-off due to a medical condition called “Barotraumas”, that implies injuries caused by increased air pressure.

When the plane takes off and lands, the air pressure around us changes rapidly. This may cause the Eustachian tube in our ears, to be completely or partially blocked. The vacuum created in the middle ear tends to pull the eardrum inwards, causing pain.

So, chocolates are chewed during travelling in aeroplane to balance the air pressure. It also helps to ease nervousness.

Regards
