In automotive and industrial applications, it acts as a protective layer to reduce friction between mechanical parts, increase corrosion resistance and allow the material to endure increased amounts of wear. As it is an expensive metal it is applied as a layer over less expensive metal as this method provides the good qualities of chromium at an affordable price.
