Taplow, like other students in his class was intimidated and scared of Crocker-Harris. Taplow however, would dare not disobey Crocker-Harris, for he respected him, who unlike other teachers in the form, was not a 'sadist'.
Moreover, somewhere inside Taplow also cherished a slight sympathy for Crocker-Harris--who generally avoided any kind exchange with his students.
