Compare and contrast the characters of Mr. Otis and Lord Canterville with reference to their reactions to the gift box of jewels given to Virginia by the ghost.

Mr. Otis is an honest man and considers the jewels that Miss Virginia had received from the Ghost to be the family heirlooms of Lord Canterville. In the long speech that he gives Lord Canterville regarding the lack of importance of jewels for young girl reflects his Puritan beliefs. However, the speech itself is quite comical, It makes Lord Canterville smile, which he camouflages by pulling his moustache frequently. He then refuses to accept the jewels stating that Mr. Otis had take the house at its valuation. Since he and his family were unaware of the existence of the jewels, they rightfully belonged to Miss Virginia. Moreover, he did not wish to incur the wrath of the Ghost by taking the Jewels from her. This reflects the fact that Lord Canterville too is an honest man and at the same time has strong traditional beliefs. The two characters are honest, the only difference being one is modern and the other traditional.
