Compare the magnetic properties of soft iron and steel and which of them will you select for a i) permanent magnet ii) core of a transformer iii) magnetic crane?

Iron  are magnetised relatively fast. However,  soft iron lose its magnetism just as fast. These properties are particularly useful when strong but temporary magnets are requires i.e, electromagnets. like core of transformer and magnetic crane.

Steel takes comparatively  longer to become magnetised, but retains its magnetism for much longer periods. This characteristic, called high retention, enables steel to be used as permanent magnets.

The coercivity,   is a measure of the ability of a ferromagnetic material to withstand an external magnetic field without becoming demagnetised.

The ability of a substance to retain or resist magnetization, frequently measured as the strength of the magnetic field that remains in a sample after removal of an inducing field.

Kindly refer the magnetisation curve between the soft iron and steel
