Dear Student

Traditional methods of irrigation:

Traditional methods of irrigation involve different ways of obtaining water from wells, lakes, and canals and transporting it to fields with the help of cattle or by human labour. Traditional ways of lifting water from water sources are as follows:

Rahat or lever system is a traditional method of irrigation in which animals like oxen is used to pull out water from the wells. This water is then evenly spread out over the fields. It is cheap but not very efficient method of irrigation.

Moat or pulley system involves the drawing of water from the well in a bucket using the mechanism of pulley and then irrigate the field from this water.

Dhekli system of irrigation involves pole as a support to obtain water from well or canals. It uses rope and bucket on one end of a heavy stick and a heavy counter weight at the other. In this system, man or woman uses rope and container to obtain water from well for irrigation purpose.

A chain pump consists of two large wheels, connected by a chain. Buckets are hanged on the chain. The bottom wheel is half immersed in the water source. As the wheel is turned, the buckets dip into the pool and pick up water. The chain then lifts them to the upper wheel, where the water from the buckets is transferred to the pool. The chain then carries the empty buckets back down to be refilled and the process continues.

Modern methods of irrigation are :

  • Sprinkler system,
  • Drip system and

Sprinkler system : It is useful in those areas where sufficient water is not available, it is beneficial for the irrigation of sandy soil. In this type of system, the perpendicular pipes, having rotating nozzles on top, are joined to the main pipeline at regular intervals. When water is allowed to flow through the main pipe under pressure with the help of a pump, it escapes from the rotating nozzles. It gets sprinkled on the crop as if it is raining.

Drip system : In this method, water is not wasted at all, hence beneficial in those areas where water is available in very low amount. In this system, the water falls drop by drop just at the position of the roots. So it is called drip system. It is the best technique for watering fruit plants, gardens and trees. The system provides water to plants drop by drop.
