cotton is a solid but it floats on water. why?

cotton has a porous structure, the are gets trapped between the pores making overall density of the cotton less then the water hence the cotton floats on the water. when the water replaces the air the pores the density increases and the cotton sinks.

Cotton is porous, so the air gets trapped between the Pores making its density lesser than the water and therefore cotton floats on water.

IT IS LESS DENSE AS COMPRED TO WATER BECAUSE OF AIR CONTENT THAT IS WHY IT FLOATS ON WATER

cotton is a porous substance with low density therefore it floats upon water

cotton is a metal but it floats on water because it has a low density than water.

According the laws of Physics, the difference if the density of a solid is less than the density of a liquid, the solid will float on the liquid.

Cotton is a material that has a porous structure, and the pores trap air inside themselves.

As a result, the overall density of cotton is less than water, which is why it floats on water.

Cotton has a large number of pores, in which air is trapped. This results in the decrease of density and increase of volume. So it floats on water. Hope this helps!
