dadabahi Naroji arrived at poverty line. this is how he arrived at the factor of three-fourths; (1/6) (nil) + (1/6) (half)+(2/3) (full)=(3/4)(full)

To estimate the poverty line, Dadabhai Naroji appropriated the prices for items included in the menu of prisoners. However, he adjusted the calculation to take into consideration proportion of children in the population. He assumed that one-third of the entire population comprises of children.Out of this one-third, one half (i.e. 1/6) consumed very little (approximately nil) while the rest half consumed half the adult diet. Thus, algebraically, poverty line is estimated as follows.
