DEAR MA'AM,

IN THE EXAMPLE OF CARBON MONOXIDE (CO) WHICH YOU GAVE TO EXPLAIN THE LEWIS STRUCTURE, WON'T THE OXYGEN ATOM BEING MORE ELECTRONEGATIVE THAN CARBON, WILL ATTRACT AN ELECTRON FROM THE CARBON ATOM TO MAKE A LONE PAIR RATHER GIVING AN ELECTRON TO IT.

Dear Student,

Electronegativity means the tendency of an atom to attract a shared pair of electrons towards it. Oxygen is more electronegative than Carbon, this means that the shared pair of electron between Carbon and Oxygen will be more towards oxygen and nothing more.
