Define and explain ''Chromosome linkage''.

Dear student,
Linkage in a chromosome refers to the tendency of genes in a chromosome that are closer together to be segregated together during crossing over and after meiosis from parental chromosome to daughter chromosome. It is usually observed in the event of sexual reproduction.
In case of crossing over genetic fragments of chromatids are exchanged across the crossing over point termed as chiasma for non-homologous chromosomes. Now, the farther two separate genes are, the more is the probability that the chiasma will be between them and the two genes will be segregated separately. But in case of genes that are close together, the probability of  them being segregated together increases. In this case it is said that the genes are 'linked'.

Regards.
