An atom is defined as the basic unit of matter. By basic, we mean that it is thebuilding block of matter. It is the smallest particle of an element that can take part in a chemical reaction. Every atom consists of protons, neutrons and electrons.

LIKE A BUILDING IS MADE OF BRICKS.IN THE SAME MANNER ALL THE MATTER AROUND IS MADE UP OF ATOMS. WE CAN ALSO SAY THAT ATOMS ARE THE SMALLEST PARTICLES OF MATTER.IT WAS PROPOSED BY INDIAN PHILOSPHER MAHARISHI KANAD THAT IF WE WILL GO ON DIVIDING MATTER,WE SHALL GET SMALLER AND SMALLER PARTICLES OF MATTER AND ULTIMATELY A STAGE IS REACHED WHEN THE OBTAINED PARTICLE CANNOT NE DIVIDED FURTHER .HE CALLED THE ULTIMATE PARTICLE 'PARMANU'.DEMOCRITUS AND LUCCIPPUS ALSO BELIEVED IN THE SAME THEORY AND CALLED THESE INDIVISIBLE PARTICLES 'ATOMS' WHICH MEANS 'INDIVISIBLE '.
