define equivalent capacitance

Equivalent capacitance is the net(total) capacitance of the capacitors connected in a circuit.

There are two ways to connect the capacitors among themselves in the circuit.

(1) Capacitors in series

Then equivalent capacitor(C_s) is given by

$\frac{1}{C_{s}} = \frac{1}{C_{1}} + \frac{1}{C_{2}} + \frac{1}{C_{3}} + ........... W h e r e C_{1}, C_{2}, C_{3}, ......... a r e t h e c a p a c i \tan c e s o f c p a c i t o r s .$

(2) Capacitors in parallel

Then equivalent capacitor(C_p) is given by

$C_{p} = C_{1} + C_{2} + C_{3} + ..........$
