Define Hydraulic Stress....!!!

as answered by an expert...

Hydraulic stress is the measure of the internal force per unit area acting on the liquids.

To start with solids let us consider a metal bar to be stretched with a force F on the opposite sides.

Now because of this external force the bar will have an internal equal and opposite force to oppose the pulling force according to the Newton’s third law of motion. The ratio of the internal force and the cross surface area of the bar is the stress experienced by the bar.

Thus the stress is defined as F  /A, A is the CS area.

Now according to Newton’s 3 rd law of motion F  = -F. Now taking only the magnitude; we have F = F

Thus stress is mathematically F/A. Although, it is not physically same as pressure as because in pressure external force per unit area is considered but in stress it is the internal force per unit area.

Now in case of liquids too the hydraulic stress is defined in the same way.
