Define sampling method of collection of data. Explain the various methods of sampling.

Dear student,

In sampling method of data collection, a sample is taken from the entire population and the conclusions are drawn from that sample.
The different methods of sampling are- Random sampling and non-randon sampling.

1. Random Sampling-  In this method samples are selected at random basis. This method is based on concept of probability.
The methods of random sampling are:
i) Simple random sampling- In this the process is used in selecting the samples. Here each item has equal probability of being chosen. There are two methods of simple random sampling:-
a) Lottery method- In this, all items are given a unique number and a slip of paper are made for each item. The slips are kept in a bowl and then selection by draw is done.
b) Table of random numbers- Lottery method is not feasible if items are large, in that case table of random number is used. In this, the items are arranged in ascending order, then a page of random number table is selected and  sample is taken by selecting successive numbers in the table.
ii) Restricted Random Sampling- It consists of following methods:
a) Stratified Random Sampling: In this method, the universe is divided into some homogeneous group and a sample is drawn from each group at random.
b) Systematic sampling- In this method, the population is arranged in a systematic manner and then items are chosen randomly.
c) Cluster sampling- In this method, population is divided into groups and sub groups and then selection is done in stages.

2) Non random sampling- In this method, samples are selected on basis of investigator's judgement. It consists of following methods:
i) Judgement sampling: In this method samples are selecting by investigator himself using his judgement.
ii) Quota sampling: In this method, interviewer are allotted certain quota and they are required to interview a certain number from their quota.
iii) Convenience method: In this samples are drawn according to convenience of investigator.
