Red blood cells at work. Hemoglobin is the protein inside red blood cells that carries oxygen. Red blood cells also remove carbon dioxide from your body, transporting it to the lungs for you to exhale. Red blood cells are made inside your bones, in the bone marrow.

A high?eosinophil?count suggests an allergy, parasitic infection (such as worms), collagen disease, or disease of the spleen or central nervous system.
Basophil?count is elevated in chickenpox, sinusitis, diabetes, myxedema, and polycythemia.
Lymphocyte?count is elevated in diverse infectious and immune disorders.
Monocyte?count is elevated in viral infections and inflammation.Normal white blood cellsAbnormalities in white cell morphology (photos below), combined with abnormal numbers, typify the various leukemias. Then it?s important to identify which type of WBCs is abnormal in order to know which type of leukemia a patient has. Proper identification of WBC types is indispensable to planning an appropriate treatment.Acute monocytic (monoblastic) leukemia (AML)Chronic lymphocytic leukemia
(It would take an expert eye to distinguish this from the AML above it.)Neutrophilia, as might be seen in a bacterial infection..Photo credits, in order

White blood cells (WBCs), also called leukocytes or leucocytes, are the cells of the immune system that are involved in protecting the body against both infectious disease and foreign invaders. All white blood cells are produced and derived from multipotent cells in the bone marrow known as hematopoietic stem cells.
