Dear student, 

1. The literacy rate in the country during the British rule was extremely low. The literacy rate was as low as 16%. This denoted social backwardness in the economy. 

2. There was lack of health care facilities and health awareness in the economy.  This was the main cause of poor demographic profile in the economy.
 3. The infant mortality rate was as high as about 218 per thousand.

4. The life expectancy in the country was as low as 32 years. 

5. The economy suffered from massive widespread poverty. low standard and quality of living.
