According to World Bank, Global Poverty has declined to 21% in 2001 from 28% in 1990.
In China and south-east Asian countries, poverty has declined substantially due to massive
investment in human resources. In India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and
Sri Lanka , the decline of poverty is slow.

1) There is decline in poverty ratios in India from about 55 per cent in 1973 to 36 per cent in 1993.

2) The proportion of people below poverty line further came down to about 26 per cent in 2000.
