DESCRIBE THE EXPLOITATION OF THE INDIGO SHARECROPPERS BY THE ENGLISH LANDLORDS.DID GANDHI HELP THEM TO GET AN HOUNARABLE SETTLEMENT?

The arable of the district of Champaran was divided into large estates which were owned by the English landlords. Indian tenant worked on these lands. The chief commercial crop grown was indigo. The landlords forced the tenants to plant 15% of their holdings which was three twentieths of their holdings with indigo. The sharecroppers were forced to surrender the entire indigo harvest as rent to the English. This exploitation was carried on by a long-term contract. Later, when the English landlords came to know about Germany making synthetic indigo they changed their strategy of exploitation. They obtained agreements from the sharecroppers to pay the landlords a compensation for being released from the 15% arrangement.
Gandhi, after knowing all this, visited the secretary of the British landlord's association. There he was not cooperated with. Then he called on the British official commissioner of the Tirhut division in which Champaran lay. Gandhi's efforts took him to the court on grounds of disobeying the British government. Gandhi was released without bail in the legal proceedings. The Lieutenant Governor of the province had ordered the case to be dropped but Gandhi and his team of lawyers carried on an enquiry. The enquiry proved to be a success when it forced the planters of give a refund of 25% to the sharecroppers.
