describe the miserable appearances of the ghost.what were the reasons that drove him to that state

The ghost of Canterville presents a miserable and bedraggled picture instead of a scary one. Instead of haunting anyone, he gets terrorised by others. When he laughs demonically he is offered medicine and when he drags his chains, he is offered lubricator, his victims gain in strength and the ghost falls sick, has cold and virtually becomes an invalid. The peal of thunder and the persistent bloodstain do not work in his favour. The ghost is a stereotype. “I must tattle my chains, groan through keyholes, walk at night”, he confesses but instead of a terror he becomes a caricature who is beaten by the twins at all junctures.
The main reason was the Otis family who refused to be scared by the ghost. They were very courageous and not at all frightened by the idea of a ghost. This drew the ghost to desperation and he became weak and sick.
