Describe the outbreeding devices that prevent the auto gamy
Dear student,
Regards
Self-pollination is seen widely in bisexual flowers often leads to inbreeding depression. Thus plants are adapted to promote cross-pollination, which is known as outbreeding in order to maintain the race. Factors which aids cross-pollination are as follow:
- Unisexual flower: Flower containing single-sex either female or male, hence cross-pollination is the only choice for reproduction.
- Non-Synchronization: In bisexual flower, the time of the release of male and female gametes are crucial for the successive pollination to occur. Plants do adopt some special mode of delaying the time of maturing the male and female gamete which further blocks the self-pollination process in bisexual flowers.
- Self-incompatibility: In case of the male flower is infertile to fertilize the ova, and this sterility could be due to the deformity in the structural growth in androecium or gynoecium.
- Emasculation: It is a technique where anther is removed from the flower or covered in such a way no pollen grains interacts with stigma. Its done to prevent self-pollination.
