Describe the role of poor peasantry in the CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE MOVEMENT.

Poor peasants played a significant role in the Civil Disobedience Movement. They entered the movement (1930-34) because they were not just interested in the lowering of the revenue demand. Many had rented land. They could not pay rent because of the depression and diminishing cash incomes. They wanted the unpaid rent to the landlord remitted. For them, Swaraj meant a reduction in their rent. In some parts of the country, they launched a ‘no rent’ campaign which was not backed by Congress because this might upset the rich peasant and the landlords. This made some sections of poor peasants join a variety of radical movements, often led by socialists and communists.
