Describe the three different ways by which natural selection can effect the frquency of a heritable trait in a population

Three different ways by which natural selection can effect the frequency of a heritable trait in a population are as follows:
  • Directional selection: The fitness of the extreme phenotype is highest than the other phenotypes in a population; thereby, the extreme phenotype has the highest rate of adaptability.
  • Stabilising selection: The fitness of the intermediate phenotypes is much higher than the extreme phenotypes; thus, excluding the extreme phenotypes from the population.
  • Disruptive selection: The fitness of the intermediate phenotypes is lesser whereas the extreme phenotypes have higher rate of adaptability; thereby, eliminating the intermediate phenotypes from the population.
