Different types of lichens on the basis of thallus organisation:
1. Crustose lichen- Leaf-like thalli and colonize the rocks after foliose lichen. They helps in absorbing more water and thus increases soil moisture content.  e.g. Graphic scripta.

2. Foliose lichen- Thallus is flat with leaf-like lobes containing different layers of tissues. They colonise the bare surface of rocks first during succession. e.g. Parmelia.

3. Fruticose lichen- They have most complex thallus which is branched, cylindrical ot sometimes hanging like a tassel. They are found on branches of the tree on rocks etc. eg. Usnea, Cladonia
