Gaitonde read a completely different outcome of the Battle of Panipat than he had previously known: Marathas won the war and Abdali was chased back to Kabul by the Maratha army led by Sadashivrao Bhau and Vishwasrao..The immediate consequences were the supremacy of Marathas in Northern India. This led to curtailing the expansion being followed by East India Company. Vishwasrao, along with his brother, was able to limit East India's influence to small pockets near Bombay, Calcutta and Madras.
