determine the resulting temperature when 150g of ice at 0 degree C is mixed with 300g of water at 50 degree celcius . latent heat of fusion of ice is 336 J per g.pls tell me how to solve it.... i don`t know which formula here must be applied and how.

See, here basically two formulas will be used

  1. Q = mL, L = latent heat of fusion
  2. Q = ms(T2 – T1)

first one will be used for the conversion of ice to water when it undergoes phase transition the other will be used to find the temperature corresponding to the addition of heat. Now if the heat in 300g of water is greater than the heat required to melt the ice then there will be rise in the temperature of water other wise water will remain at 0oC.

L = 336 J/g

Q1 = m×L

=> Q1 = 150×336 = 50400 J

Amount of heat in 300g of water at 50oC above 0 0C is

Q2 = ms(T2-T1)

T2 = 50 oC

T1 = 0oC

=> Q2 = 300×1×(50-0) = 15000 J

We see Q2 <Q1

Since the amount of heat in the 300g water is insufficient to melt the ice, the final temperature will be 0 oC.
