did Hana think japanese torture their prisoners?why?

Hana thought that the Japanese tortured the American prisoners of war because of the deep red scars that she saw on the wounded man's neck, just under his ear. The thought came to her that these scars could only have been inflicted as a means to torture prisoners of war. Hana thought so because prisoners of war were tortured in these prisoner of war camps. The soldier being an American must have been tortured by the Japanese.
