Difference between former and latter

The word former is a formal way of saying 'before' or referring to the first option and latter refers to after, later or referring to the other given option.
For example: I applied to the University of Madras and the University of Delhi. The former is in my home town, whilst the latter is quite far.
In this sentences, former refers to the first option (University of Madras) and latter refers to the last option (University of Delhi)
