difference between g and G .

Universal gravitation constant(G)

1.It is define as the force of attraction acting between two bodies each of unit mass, whose centers are placed unit distance apart.

2. Its value is same throughout the universe .

3. It is a scalar quantity .

4. Its value dose not depends upon the nature and the size of the bodies.

5. Dimensional formula for G is [M-1L3T-2].

Acceleration due to gravity(g)

1.It is define as the constant acceleration produced in a body when it falls freely under the effect of gravity .

2. its value changes from place to palce.

3. it is a vector quantity.

4. Its value depends upon the nature and the size of the bodies.

Hi,
G is gravitational constant and small g is acceleration due to gravity.
The value of G is always constant whereas the value of g varies.
Hope this helps,

G is the Universal Gravitational Constant, and is approximately equal to 6.676048 x 10-11 Nm2/kg2

g is the gravitational force of attraction produced by the earth at the surface, and g is related to G as:

g = GM/R(where G is gravitational constant, M is mass of earth and R is radius of the earth)

g is approximately equal to 9.80665 m/s2, and varies at different locations on earth.

In Physics-
G is gravitational constant & small g is acceleration due to gravity...!!
The value of G is always constant whereas the value of g varies...!!!

G is Newton's universal gravitational constant in the formula

F=GMm/r^2

Or

G = Fr^2 / Mm

Where M and m are two masses and r is the distance between the two masses.

The unit of G is N*m^2*kg^(-2).

If we consider a unit mass and calculate the force exerted on this unit mass by the mass M,

F / m = GM / r^2

If r is fixed then F/ m becomes a constant.

If we write F/m = g

g = G M / r^2.

Thus the relation between g and G is given by the above equation.

The unit of g is m/s^2.

G is a universal constant which is independent of M m and r,

where as g is a constant which depends upon M and r.

g is force per unit mass or acceleration. It has dimensions of 1in length and -2 in time and 0 in mass.

G has a dimension of 3 in length -1 in mass and -2 in time and has no special name for this quantity.
