difference between microsatellite and minisatellite dna

Dear Student.
Please find below the solution to the asked query.

Mini satellites: Satellite DNA found in small clusters of 10-60 bp is referred as minisatellites. These are often located at the telomeres. It consist of several kilobases of characteristics tandem repeats. They are highly polymorphic. They are also known as VNTR sequence and repetitive GC sequence. Used in DNA finger printing.

Microsatellite: Occur in repitetitive DNA motifs of 1-6 bp. It acts as a genetic marker because they are highly polymorphic and distributed throughout the genome.  Often referred as short tandem repeats (STRs) or simple sequence repeats (SSRs). Helps in DNA profiling for identifying kinships, locating gene for diseases.
