In most of the higher plants, the chloroplast thylakoid membranes
are structurally divided into appressed and non appressed regions,
which can be differentiated as follows:

Non appressed regions
Appressed regions

Those regions which are in contact with stroma (matrix) not the
other thylakoids

Appressed regions are those where two thylakoids are in contact
with each other

Contain ATP synthase and PS I
Contain PS II
