Differenciate between retreating monsoon and south west monsoon?

The differences between the South-West Monsoon and Retreating Monsoon :

South-West Monsoon

  • These winds blow from June to September
  • The direction of these winds is from West to the North East.
  • During these months S.W. Monsoons cover the whole of India and give heavy rainfall. The humidity is high. The pressure is low on the land area.


Retreating Monsoon

  • These winds blow during October and November.
  • These winds are calm.
  • The temp. increases again, the land being covered with rainy water, the humidity becomes high. The temperature goes up. The coastal areas of Tamil Nadu receive maximum rainfall from these retreating winds.

South west monsoon

They blow during months of June to September

The months of October and November are called retreating monsoon.

They blow from high pressure area on sea to low pressure area on land.

During this season, monsoon trough of low pressure becomes weaker and is gradually replaced by high pressure.

These bring rain to greater part of India.

The deltas of Godavari , Krishna and Kaveri receive

Rainfall from tropical cyclones

These blow into India in two branches i.e. Arabian sea and Bay of Bengal branch.

Tropical cyclones and other local winds prevail during this period.
