Differentiate between the butan-1-ol and butan-2-ol by iodoform test of alcohol.

Butan-1-ol is a primary alcohol and butan-2-ol is a secondary alcohol (methyl alcohol). Both are differentiated by iodoform test.

Iodine and sodium hydroxide reacts with secondary alcohols (methyl alcohols-here butan-2-ol) to form the yellow precipitate CHI3 (iodoform) which is the basis of the iodoform test. While Butan-1-ol does not react with I2/NaOH to form iodoform.
