Meaning

According to the principle of unity of command, one subordinate should receive orders from only one superior.

According to the principle of unity of direction, all activities in an organisation that have the same objectives should be grouped together and completed under one supervisor and one plan.

ExampleSuppose A(sales manager) gives B a task that has to be completed in 5 days. On the other hand, C (finance manager) asks B to complete the same task in 3 days. This will lead to confusion in terms of targets and the principle of unity of command is said to be violated.Suppose an organisation deals in two product lines- cosmetics and accessories, then the organisation should have a separate department for each of the product lines.
