People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (PwIDDs) have for long remained dependent on their parents and the society at large for their existence. What they have not got, and what they yearn for, is respect, self-confidence and support.

Open employment (working with normal people) provides them with a platform to achieve all the three. In fact, some developed countries discourage sheltered employment, which is based on empathy and is often less productive.

In our country, open employment is practised mostly for blind, speech impaired and physically disabled with very few examples of PwIDDs getting the opportunities to prove their mettle.

The Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPD) bill, which is pending in Parliament, has a provision for increased job reservations. It also emphasizes on the importance of open employment. "Since job openings in the public sector are likely to be negligible, the focus should be on the private sector, especially the service segment which is booming," says Commander (Retd) Shrirang Bijur of the Association for the Welfare of Persons with a Mental Handicap in Maharashtra.

Hospitality, housekeeping, restaurants, home delivery, courier pick ups, security, reception and back-end services are some areas where endless opportunities of open employment exist.
