Gulliver described the script of Lilliput to be strange as it did not follow any normal known conventions of writing. The script of Lilliput was not like the Arabic or Islamic texts wherein one writes backwards nor was it like oriental texts where one writes vertically. The peculiar writings of Lilliput ran diagonally, which Gulliver comments was similar to how some Englishwomen wrote, which was really meant to be a jibe.
