Eastern Coast

This physiographic region of the Eastern Coastal Plain lies between Eastern Ghats and Bay of Bengal, stretching from Tamil Nadu in the south to West Bengal in the north. The width of the plains varies between 100 and 130 km. These coastal plains experience high humidity with temperature exceeding 30 °C. 

Rivers draining these plains and deltas are Mahanadi, Godavari, Kaveri and Krishna. The region gets both the northeast and southwest monsoon rains with the annual rainfall ranging between 40 inches to 120 inches.

The plains are divided into six regions — the Mahanadi delta, the southern Andhra Pradesh plain, the Krishna-Godavari deltas, the Kanyakumari coast, the Coromandel Coast and sandy coastal.

Western Coast

The Western Coastal Plain is with the narrow width as compared to western coasts ranging from 50 to 100 km. These coastal plains are present between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea. The region stretches from Gujarat,Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka and Kerala. Major rivers flowing into the sea are the Tapi, Narmada, Mandovi and Zuari. Vegetation found is of deciduous types.

The coast is divided into 3 parts namely, Konkan, which is situated inMaharashtra, Goa and northern parts of Karnataka; the Kanara in Karnataka and the Malabar Coast in Kerala.
