Dear Student,

Indentured labour was a practice introduced by the British during the nineteenth century. The term indicates bondage under the labour contract and these labourers work for employers for a specific period of time. In India, indentured labour were hired and recruited under such contractual conditions which promise a return travel to India only after they had worked for five years under their employer's plantations. But very often the employers resorted to breach of promises. It was a form of debt bondage. The labour recruitments were done by the agents who were employed by the owners of the plantations and they were paid a small commission. In order to recruit more labourers, these agents provided false information on destination, modes of travel and nature of work to attract the migrant labourers. Sometimes, the agents even go to an extent of forcibly abducting the unwilling labourers. These are the different ways in which the indentured labour were recruited.
