Do u agree with Mahatma Gandhi s views that English education had enslaved Indians? Which values did it seek to nurture and promote ?

Dear Student,

It would be very subjective to argue whether we agree with Gandhi's views on English education:

The following points may help you:

a. Mahatma Gandhi was critical of modern western education which according to him it has enslaved us .
b.
English education established  their cultural domination and supremacy in India, swaying away our thoughts, mind and spirit.
c. Mahatma Gandhi rightly argued that colonial education created a sense of inferiority in the minds of Indians. It is for this reason Gandhi emphasized on Indian languages, on swadeshi
d. Gandhiji believed that English education has made us strangers in our own land.
e. We according to Gandhi lost touch with our own past, our culture, our heritage.
f.  The
system  focused a lot on books, on reading and writing rather on experiences, oral and practical knowledge .
g. In fact, Gandhiji argued that  Western system of education  would only make person literate and not educated as it is the practical knowledge and experiences that would allow child to do some creative work through art, crafts, that will enable child to learn outside the rigidities of books, discipline as established by the British.

Being at that period of history, many nationalists supported Gandhi's views. We may support Gandhi views on the following grounds:

a. Education through vernacular would make us more aware and enlightened about our country's rich history and culture.
b. Western education on the other hand would make people overlook the importance of Indian languages.
c.  National education would bring about a more holistic development.
d. It would prevent blind aping of the Western style and culture.

The values which Gandhi sought to promote were those of :

i. Respect towards one's culture
ii. Pride in Indian languages
iii.Bringing about holistic development
iv. Nurture mind, body and soul.

Regards
